How to Shop at Aldi

Recently I received the most hilarious text from a friend who had read my post How to Reduce Household Expenditure and decided to give shopping at Aldi a try. As I read the text in fits of giggles, I realised that if you're not a loyal Aldi customer then trying to do a full grocery shop there can seem like quite an obstacle course.
And therefore I bring you...

How to shop at
Aldi
*NOT A SPONSORED POST!
You're going to need a couple of things, best to make sure you have them BEFORE you leave the house.

Reusable shopping bags

Plenty of reusable shopping bags.
They do sell them in store so don't panic if you forget.

Trolley token
A gold coin or a reusable token. If you forget this, you're up the proverbial creek. Although they sell them in store, you have to get through the maze to the checkout, queue up to buy it (or get change) and back out to a trolley, it's not worth the hassle! Alternatively, you can try what my friend did and buy a trolley off a carpark bogan.

Baby in trolley, Aldi

Check out A eyeing off the carpark bogans. Usually when I hit the shops I'm all about the baby wearing, but babygirl is getting so darn big now, so I thought I'd try her in the trolley like a big girl. She loved it, and she suffered far less bumps to the head.

But, I digress. Now, there isn't always an obvious pattern to the layout of groceries at Aldi, so you need to pay close attention. The sugar and flour aren't with the other baking goods. The stocks aren't near the soups. The mayonnaise is NO WHERE NEAR the sauce. Seriously Aldi, who planned your layout? A blind man? Study each and every item to be sure you don't miss out on any hidden gems. Like these AWESOME Spiderman socks and undies that I grabbed for my boys.
Spiderman underwear, Aldi specials

There is no express checkout. I'm all for an act of kindness, and in the right circumstances I will gladly offer you my place if you only have a couple of items. If, however, I have half of my items already on the conveyor belt, one child with a swollen, throbbing hand after I squashed it between the trolley and the booze shelf, and a baby with a dirty nappy, then EVERY MINUTE IS PRECIOUS. In this situation, do not tell me that I should let the guy behind you through because he's just grabbing milk. He knows there is no express line at Aldi, he could have 'just grabbed milk' from Woolworths, so NO, no-one is getting past my loud and stinky trolley, thankyouverymuch!

Aldi conveyor belts operate at lightening speed, so you need to be a Ninja and move your shopping onto the conveyor belt faster than you've ever had to in your life. The operators are also the fastest in all of the supermarkets. Therefore you can't leave any gaps on the conveyor belt. If you're doing a particularly large shop, here's what will happen;
The conveyor belt will be full.
Your trolley will still have stuff in it.
Super fast operator dude will pile up so many groceries that it looks like an episode of Hoarders and he will have no where to move your groceries because your trolley is still by your side FULL OF GROCERIES.
Yes, I am speaking from experience.

Heavy or bulky items must go on the conveyor belt FIRST so that they can go into the trolley first, therefore when placing any heavy or bulky items in your trolley, make sure they remain accessible.

Fragiles (eg eggs) need to go on the conveyor belt LAST so they can go into the trolley last and sit on top of all of your other items. Because, trust me, when operator dude is throwing your items at you at breaknecking pace and in a panic to keep up with him you are frantically flicking them into the trolley then you will lose an entire punnet of blueberries all over the floor. And yes I am again speaking from experience.

Do not EVER try and fill your reusable shopping bags at the checkout. We regular Aldi shoppers hate this. It holds up the lightening fast queues. You need to throw that shit in your trolley and GET OUT. You can try and pack your bags inside, but if you're mistrusting like me, you might fear that the bogan standing far too close to you intends to put your shopping in their trolley and take off, then place your baby in the boot of your car and bag your groceries there. Because there is nothing wrong with a baby in a car boot.
Baby grocery shopping

And just because I love Aldi so much, I'm going to share with you a couple of my favourites.

Mamia Supa Fit

Mamia Nappies. Ultra absorbent, no leaks, comfortable, and on average $0.20 per nappy
Trimat Laundry Powder

I cannot rave enough about this stuff. The Trimat Sensitive washing powder is something like $5.99 for 1.5kg and it is AWESOME. Our clothes are cleaner, it's gentle on skin for the little ones, I just love it.
Westcliff Spurtz

My boys love this stuff. At $2.69 for a 4 pack, it is 99% pureed fruit that is delicious when frozen. Some days my kids whine about eating fruit so I hit them up with one of these and everyone is happy. They have a few different flavours to choose from.

And while writing this post, guess what I found? Someone who loves Aldi more than I do!

So tell me, dear reader, have you tried Aldi?
Hate it or rate it?

    1. I haven't heard of Lidl. But yes that is what I love too, you get so much more for your money. Thanks for stopping by :)

  2. Me, I'm not such a big Aldi fan but that is probably because I haven't got the patience to wander around inspecting everything to see whether it is something that I need / want / can use but I do know many people who swear by them.
    Have a great day !

    1. Yeah, see, on the one hand as Shari said below, there is limited choice so it's simpler than a supermarket shop, but on the other hand as I said if you don't pay attention you miss the gems. But once you get used to it it's not so bad :)
      Thanks

  3. Big Aldi fan here. Love the fact that limited choice (no decisions about baked beans in ham sauce, baked beans in extra tomato sauce, baked beans in cheesy chilli sauce yada yada yada, just give me the beans!) means I'm outta there super quick!!

  4. I am guilty of trying to pack the bags at the checkout LOL.. your point on this explains some of the looks I've received. A great tip, thanks. I thought it was just because I thought I must look hilarious frantically trying to keep up. I always get overcome with Aldi madness and buy way too many things that I never intended to buy that shop.

    1. Ah Kaz YOU'RE the culprit LOL. Throw it all in your trolley and get outta my way! hehe.

  5. Aldi is definitely a learning experience, that's for sure! I remember the first time Dave and I went we had no idea and had to learn fast! It's almost a little cut-throat! I reckon my fave thing about Aldi (apart from the coffee machine of course!) is their awesome specials on non-grocery stuff, like the sand & water table I got for Mia for $40, as opposed to almost $100 everywhere else I have seen them. Love it!

    1. I'm going to have to come over for a coffee to give this machine a go. I think I might buy one, the one I have is dying a slow and painful death.

  6. Thanks for the tips.... I recently committed to future Aldi shopping, so this post will be most helpful. Goodbye parcel pick-up at Woolworths and Coles online shopping, I'm going to start some major savings!!! And 20c a nappy, I've been paying up to 40c!!! I'm definitely converted :)

    1. Their nappies are seriously good. We switched over to them early on and have never looked back! Their wipes are also the best ones I have used.

    2. Paying up to 40c a nappy is criminal Helen! Get onto Aldi! I agree with Kylie too, I LOVE their wipes. The ones that you can buy bulk with the refillable container are thick and strong. I've used the unscented ones for 2 years.

  7. I never ask to go in front of others, but if they have two things, I'll let them in front, but I think its rude for people to ask. The checkouts actually move really fast! The one thing I don't really like, is that they close checkouts really quickly.

    1. I agree, I think it's rude, especially when, as I said, a mother is half way through with her 2 crying children. But I have no problem letting you through when the stars are aligned and my day is going smoothly hehehe x

  9. I love Aldi.
It took me a while to warm up to it...I started going just for the nappies and found I was putting more and more things in my cart...but now I am a total convert.
Their unsweetened applesauce is great for toddlers.
Their peppermint after dinner mints are great for moms!
Those two things are always in my bag!

    1. Yes I used to go only for a few things and I started trying more and more of their products and eventually did the switch. And I agree, the applesauce is great! I haven't tried the after dinner mints, but I do strongly recommend the Moser Roth caramel chocolate *to die for*

  10. Thank you! God that is so the shopping at Aldi's experience. I do love the money I save when I shop there but good god the ninja fast ligthtning speed you have to move at the end of the shop when the are wisking things through so fast you'd think they were on fire and you are trying to stop a small person with grabby little hands from pulling everything back out as you cram them into the trolley is almost enough to make me go somewhere they just put it in bags for you. I have developed a system much like your own so that i can whack stuff in as fast as is humanly possible but the girls at my local Aldi just move quicker. Which has caused me to bite my tongue a number of times to stop myself from saying, you do realise you can't actually do anything until I put all this in my trolley, no matter how fast you whack it through?? And my tip - I write everything down on my shopping list in the order I will encounter it in the store - so I dont miss anything and there is no back tracking. Great Post, really enjoyed it. Cheers, Lee

    1. Hahaha YES! No matter how fast you go the buggers just go faster! And I do the same, my list is all in Aldi order and hubby is not allowed to add items to it cos he will certainly put them in the wrong spot lol.

  11. I love Aldi specials and a few prized items, but the speed of the conveyor belt and cashiers scare the shit out of me. I feel all panicky and anxious- bizarre!

    1. It's not bizarre - those ninja checkout operators put a lot of implied pressure on you by moving so quickly, and the expert Aldi shoppers in the queue with their condescending looks (yep that's me) don't help matters at all, no wonder you're panicky and anxious!

  12. I loved this!! I remember shopping at Aldi when I still lived in the states! Ours still had the carts that took quarters instead of tokens! But yes it takes skill to managed a full shopping trip there but if you get it down it totally pays off!! I used to coupon and would search aldi for their prices then take my coupons to Walmart get my coupon and a price match! haha evil! (And to think I was just out of high school then!) You got me laughing though! I think the tellers go through speed training to be able to manage what they do!

    1. Speed training hahaha yes for sure!
And I wouldn't call your Walmart coupon scheme evil, I'd call it intelligent! Well done. Gotta save where we can x

  13. Seriously, this post came at the right time for me. I've been blogging this month about how I wanted to reduce my food bill from Coles but that visiting Aldi (with all its stuff everywhere) just freaks the shit out of me lol

    1. Liz, it just takes time to get used to! I used to shop at Coles as well, and although sometimes I still have to stop there to get an item or two (spring roll pastry for example) Aldi are getting more and more items on the shelves. It's worth it!

  14. I've shopped at Aldi, but it's not as close to home as some of the other stores and it's not a one-stop-shopping, which I prefer. Most of their items are no-name. Some of them go over well in my house and some go in the trash so I find it's best to try a few things a week to see what works. Once I work up a list of the items they carry that my family likes, it can end up in my regular rotation. Looks like you've got it all figured out!

    1. It's taken me several years! And I agree, there have been some items that have gone in the bin, the wholemeal crackers for example :)

  15. I adore Aldi. I bought a UNICYCLE there once.

But it takes a lot of prep to go there. Including a couple of stiff drinks to deal with the pressure of the checkout.

    1. A unicycle LMAO. Funny because it's true. Where else can you grab bread, eggs, milk and a unicycle?

  16. I'm almost convinced to make the five minute drive to Maroubra to try it again. I was seriously underwhelmed by first Aldi experience (which made it very much like having sex). The nappies were however a good deal and I'm told there's German chocolate by the truck load in there somewhere. Perhaps its hiding under the washing powder.

    1. There is some awesome chocolate! I used to know a girl who's partner was German and she said that their German sweets at Christmas time were amazing. But, not being familiar with German sweets, I can't really comment.

  17. I wasn't that convinced about Aldi, but now I've read your post :) My brother totally raves about Aldi. So do my parents. In fact, every single unnecessary electrical appliance in their house is an Aldi purchase. Does my head in. Oh well, it's cheap. And they're happy :) x

  18. I love Aldi, but I'm going to be giving it a break for a couple of weeks, instead paying for convenience and getting Coles home delivery. Miss L (3) is going through an "I want" everything she sees phase and I can't handle the supermarket with them right now!

One tip a friend of mine gave me which I have used all the time since she told me. Instead of green bags, lay out three washing baskets (or however many you can fit) side by side in the boot of the car. Then the groceries go directly from the trolley to the baskets - no bags required. As my kitchen is upstairs, it's much easier carrying a basket up the stairs than juggling bags and it's less fiddly to pack and unpack :-)

    1. Oh my god Francesca that is GENIUS! What an awesome tip, thank you so much!
I hope Miss L's "I want" phase doesn't last too long.

  20. I LOVE Aldi and am a frequent shopper. For a first timer, it can be totally overwhelming and I know of soooo many who have never gone back .. I believe it takes a good few times to really start to like it. Your guide is fabulous and every first timer should read! I wanted to ask though re-the washing powder, do you have a front or top loader because I am not in love with their washing powder and I have given it a few tries only to have it clump and remain in the dispenser of my front loader. There is only a few items (that we have tried) that I will not buy there for taste preferences but everything else YES and I have saved soooo much money as long as I don't get carried away in the middle aisles lol

  21. I'm new to Aldi. I love their coffee machine Espressi and their coffee. I usually just go to get the coffee because I'm not used to their brands. But my neighbour loves Aldi and she made me discover some products like the dark chocolate and cookies. I also bought a tv there once!

  22. I love Aldi but I always seem to go to coles instead which is next door and once I pay much more at coles I regret not going to aldi. I have gotten used to coles. Im trying to change this and go into aldi more regularly. I LOVE the coffee machine- everyone who comes to my house has to have a coffee- everyone I know probably hates coming to my house because I force the coffee downs their throats. I have to get used to going there more often and I have to always remember to take bags with me because I always end up buying some which defeats the purpose of trying to be money smart!

  23. Aldi's organic dark chocolate is the SHIZNIT! And it's only $2 a block. Totally the icing on the cake x

  24. Just to let you know that the cashiers MUST scan 700 items plus per hour average, most experienced cashiers can do 1000 that is a working requirement. Counting ceases when they press total. The reason they close checkouts so quick is that there is always heaps of other work for them to do. I must admit I love the fact that they don't waste time chatting, grocery shopping is a task not a leisure activity so I'm glad to get out quickly.
If you forget your bags they don't mind you grabbing empty cardboard boxes for your shopping, then I just flatten them & recycle them.
